5 Tips for Keeping Your House Warm This Winter

It's that time of the year again when we are putting on our beanies, zipping up our jackets and keeping our hands in our pockets!! Homeowners may be finding it hard to keep the heat in and the cold out, but luckily, we’re here the share our tips for staying toasty warm throughout the June-August period, and without raising those energy prices.

1. Rug up
If you’ve got hardwood floors, get some cheap rugs for the season, and throw them down. Socks or no socks, we don’t want to bound across our rooms because the floor has gotten icy cold overnight. Put some distance between the cold floor and your feet this winter.

2. Curtains are Clever
Did you know, up to 40% of heat is lost through your property’s windows? Chuck up some heavy curtains and keep them drawn to trap in that heat. Fabrics like chenille and polyester are among the types of materials that work best for winter-purposed curtains, but the options are endless and remember: something is better than nothing.

3. Find the Leaks
Walls, floors, roof, doors, and windows – check them all and fill in any cracks or holes that might be letting heat escape. If you’re renting, check with your property manager about any significant leaks and organise those repairs as soon as possible.

4. Cover the Walls
If your home is not well insulated, you may find that your walls can become a cause for the cold creeping inside. Don’t worry, there’s actually a pretty easy fix for this. Decorate your walls (with your property manager’s approval if you’re renting), using picture frames, mirrors, or even a large bookshelf; the extra layer of thermal mass created by wall covering raise internal surface temperatures by 1°C.

5.  Sun Shiny Day
Don’t waste those sunny days! Get as much shining brightness and warmth into your home while you can, and when night-time begins to roll around, lock down like Fort Knox and trap that heat in. The family will be thankful, your home will be warm and cosy, and you won’t have to use the heater.
